Prayer to stop the wildfires

Image
Oh, Lord God, My prayer today is a lament and an intercession concerning the Colorado wildfires that are sweeping through neighborhoods and towns. You can overwhelm nature and intervene in this natural disaster. Please intervene today. While you always use tragedy and disaster to point people toward yourself , I'm asking you to stop the Colorado wildfires. Silence the strong winds and scatter snow across the valleys to stop the flames from engulfing any more homes, businesses, schools, or hospitals. Declare " Peace , be still." Protect families, animals, and frontline workers. Shield the firefighters and sustain the healthcare professionals. Comfort the sick and elderly who have been moved. Bring peace and comfort to grieving families who have lost everything. I pray for our nation to rally to help Colorado residents rebuild and recover. I ask for your Spirit to hover there, to draw residents to hope and security in you instead of their things. I pray that this disaster

Lord, heal all of me

Image
Jehovah Rapha, Heal my body and my soul. Protect me from disease and illness but use everything that you allow into my life to direct my heart towards you. I trust you and depend on you. Let me not be  afraid  of what happens to me and what I'm afraid will happen. You have my present and my future . I will follow you. Lord, heal my mind and my heart. Protect me from poisonous thoughts and beliefs. Root out my fear and my faithlessness. Heal me in every way, even the painful places like grief and insecurity.  I give every part of me to you. Only you can heal what's broken  in me. I trust you. Heal me. In Jesus' name,  Amen. Heal  me,  Lord , and I will be  heal ed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.-- Jeremiah 17:13 free image from Pixabay

Praying justice for the single parent

Image
Lord God, You champion the cause of the widow and the orphan all through your Word. I pray for your justice, mercy, and vengeance on behalf of single parents and especially for ___________. I pray for just compensation, for money lost and support not paid. I pray for your covering over the children involved that they would feel your presence and find security in your love. Cause the attorneys to perceive injustice and make a case for fairness and equity. Comfort the broken hearts of these kids and their parents. Bring conviction to the oppressor's heart. Forgive the contrite spirit. Bring unity, collaboration, and even restitution between warring parties. Help all those involved to discover life-giving options. Close opportunities where malice, revenge, and cruelty can thrive.  Give the judge wisdom and understanding. Protect the weak and vulnerable. Defend the widow(er) and abandoned children. Heal their grief. Shine your light of hope and healing into relationships and scenarios

Thanking God for Christmas

Image
Lord God of heaven, Thank you for Christmas. Thank you for breathing on us the Word of Life, for pouring out your Spirit on Mary, for empowering Joseph, for transforming shepherds and wise men. Christmas is a heavenly gift with global proportions. Thank you, Jesus, for coming to earth to save me. Thank you for humbling yourself to be born as a helpless infant (see Philippians 2 ) a human with frailties and limitations so I could trust that you understand me. So that you could take my place before God as a sinner who needs salvation ( 1 Peter 2:24 ). You created me with love in your heart-- Thank you for designing me for a purpose. And not just me: you've made and loved every person throughout human history, regardless of their response to your love. You offer everyone the hope of heaven. Thank you for fulfilling your own promises on Christmas Day, for living and dying for, for rising again in power over death--also for me. Thank you for forgiving my sins and interceding before

A Christmas prayer about waiting

Image
God promised Adam and Eve that a Savior would come. David, Hosea, Malachi, and Isaiah (and others) prophesied about his birth and his life. All the Old Testament pointed to his coming. People waited for thousands of years for him. They waited for the Messiah--the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, and the Prince of Peace. God in flesh, Emmanuel. Mary and Joseph waited for Jesus' birth and then for his revelation. Jesus' followers waited for him to take action. The church waited for him to return.  We wait for Jesus to answer our prayers. We wait for circumstances to change. We think he doesn't move fast enough, but he has never stopped moving. Christmas proves that.  We wait. We expect . We hope . We trust . Oh, God of heaven and earth,  I praise you for your gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank you for sending him to save us from our sins over 2000 Christmases ago. Your generosity astounds me! Thank you for always fulfilling your promises. You are never late an

Come, Holy Spirit of Christmas

Image
Come, Holy Spirit, Fill our hearts this Christmas. Speak to us, and help us hear you. You called Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents to your Son , and you told them not to be afraid, even though the calling was overwhelming. You promised them blessing and direction and hope . You filled Mary; you planted a God-man inside of her, a miraculous conception. Then you breathed destiny over her life. You filled Joseph with love, courage, and wisdom to protect Mary and Jesus from harm. You allowed Elizabeth to become pregnant with John the Baptist, who would point a nation toward the Messiah they'd been waiting for. You filled her with words of praise and encouragement for Mary. You filled Zechariah with joy, and he prophesied power and influence over his son. You directed unlearned shepherds to leave their flocks to find a new baby in a stable. They believed that he was their Savior, and they worshipped him and spread the news throughout their sleepy village. You led astronomers

7 Christmas Prayers everyone should pray

Image
Did you know that many of the key characters in the Christmas story left  prayers for us to read ? They were overwhelmed, amazed, frightened, and thankful. They were like us, really. They witnessed Emmanuel "God with us," just like we do. They had to stop in their stress and anxiety and notice God's wonder. And let that experience change them. Below are 7 prayers from that first Christmas.  Plus one from me.  They all address the issues we feel on a regular basis. The first 7 prayers are by the Christmas story characters themselves. Read their stories. Pray the prayers. Then watch and wait--God will fill you with wonder. I just know it! He really does wonder well. Prayer #1:  Mary--"How is this possible?"--a request for understanding ( Lk. 1:21-28 ) Prayer #2:  Mary--"Glory to God!"--a song of praise ( Lk. 1:21-55 ) Prayer #3:  Joseph--"What should I do?"--a prayer of grief and confusion ( Mtt. 1:18-20 ) Prayer #4:  Wisemen--"Where is

Praying over the Michigan shooting tragedy

Image
Heavenly Father, My heart is grieved at the loss of life in this recent school shooting.  I pray for your Spirit to comfort the families of the four high school students who needlessly lost their lives this week in Oxford, Michigan. I ask for your power of conviction and repentance to fall on Ethan Crumbly, whose soul and mind must surely be under evil influence. I pray for him to find you. I pray for his mental health and the mental health of America's children. I pray for school authorities to make mental health a priority in dealing with students, parents, and teachers. I pray for Ethan's parents , who have also been arrested. Lord, speak to them during this time about who you are and how they need you. I pray that the truth of their involvement will be discovered.  While the country and the town of Oxford is grieving and angry, Lord, I pray that hatred and retaliation don't take over. Give justice to these grief-stricken families and wisdom to the authorities. I ask t

Praying for a change in abortion laws

Image
Lord God, You are not surprised by the case before the Supreme Court or the people on either side of the issue of abortion and the right to life . You love all of us equally. You don't condemn the woman who aborts her child or the lobbyist who fights for a woman's right to choose; you don't condemn the conservative who shouts hateful remarks about Planned Parenthood or people who shout back.  But you love them equally. You grieve over the hate and the misrepresentation of your love and your law. You weep over the loss of life. You grieve with those who will experience the trauma of taking another person's life, even if that life cannot survive on its own. So Lord, without judgment of either side, I lift up this issue of life and love. I pray for our country to value what you value over political leanings and policies. We are not conservatives or liberals--we are children of God, created in your image. We are on this earth to bring people to Jesus, not list all their
