What you should pray against

Image
What are you praying against? Today I read Ephesians 5-6. Although the words are very familiar--I have a lot of it memorized--one section jumped out at me. It's where I've been living and struggling. It's time to face the music. The passage introduces a reason and a strategy for defeating everything that's wrong in the world and everything that's wrong inside me. All my anxiety and stress. All my misguided competitiveness. All my pride and confusion. All my "righteous" indignation. I'm reminded who and what I fight against. What I've forgotten to fight against. Reading this liberates and challenges me in my focus. Perhaps it will help you as well... Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world

Thank you for supportive people

Image
Lord Jesus, Thank you for sending supportive people around me. Thank you for the smiles, the compliments, the encouragement, the critiques, the celebrations,  the welcoming arms of true friends . It's hard to imagine how I'd feel your love if people weren't here on this earth showing it to me, being you, every day, even while they're being themselves. Letting your Spirit pour out through them, on me to remind me that I'm your child. I belong to you. You are guarding me, guiding me, protecting me, loving me. That's who you are. Thank you for people who are Jesus to me. What a lovely, incomprehensible concept ! Amen. "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill he law of Christ." ( Galatians 6:2 ) "Speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." ( Ephesians 5:19-20 ) &

A Prayer to Emmanuel

Image
Lord Jesus, Thank you for being Emmanuel, "God with us." (Click here for "A Christmas Prayer for you.") There's no reason that You should want to be with us, to be our God or offer forgiveness, much less become human like us. What a degradation for the Creator to become the created. Why did you do it? Here's why: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." ( John 3:16 ) Love. What a wonderful reason to take human form, and what a compelling reason for us to trust you! It's a wonder we don't comprehend "God with us" more often. (Click here to read "9 Prayers for Christmas hope.") You loved us. You and God the Father and God the Spirit. You created our world. You placed us in it. You came to us because we couldn't be good enough on our own. Then you died and paid our debt. Then to rose again

You make me shake my head

Image
Oh, Lord, You astound me and make me feel grateful. When I look around my world--my house and work and family--or when I behold your natural creation of mountains and oceans and fields, I just shake my head with wonder. Wow. Thank you. Thank you for my family, my home, my church, all which sometimes frustrate me. Thank you for my freedom, which I take for granted. Thank you for life and health, which I really take for granted. Thank you for my mind, which isn't as quick as it used to be, but it's a blessing nevertheless. Thank you for the beauty of the world, for all its variety: for the marvelous expanse of nature and also for the cities and countries filled with people, who I misunderstand or don't think about at all. Thank you for your living Word, which I don't read as much as I should, although it inspires and changes me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you through the church, which I often make about fulfilling me instead of about honori

Thankful for America

Image
Dear Lord God, I am blessed to live in America, a free country, even though I chafe under the ambition and corruption so often present in public officials. I am proud of our soldiers and civil servants, even though I read stories of their brutality and injustice in the news. I appreciate the protection I have to believe, write, live, and worship, even though I recognize our country's moral decline. We are a sinful people and a sinful nation, and yet you choose to love us and use us. You have blessed us with opportunity and responsibility, and so much good has been accomplished in the world through our nation. Because of your love and mercy. Thank you for the men and women who have served our country, faced danger, missed loved ones, endured trauma, fought to recover, and came home. Thank you for the ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives so we could enjoy freedom. Bless their families and cover them with your loving care. Thank you for tr

A prayer for my children's hearts

Image
I just read 2 Thess. 3:5 this morning on my Bible app. This is what is says, in a few different  translations: ESV--"May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ." NIV--"May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance." NKJV--"Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and the patience of Christ." This passage sounds like a prayer to pray over my children. Dear Lord God of heaven, Your grace and providence astounds me. I thank you for my children and the rich challenge and reward that parenting them brings to my life. Use me to be an effective and authentic example of your love and grace. Somehow, let them catch a glimpse of You through me, even when I'm messing up and beings so profoundly and sinfully human. And now I pray that you will direct and guide their hearts on a course toward loving You completely and whole-heartedly. As they experience Yo

Why am I afraid?

Image
Dear Lord, Why am I afraid of the things I can't control, when You are all-powerful? Why am I afraid of failure, when You've promised give me a future? Why am I afraid to defend the truth--when You have called Yourself the Way, the Truth, and the Life? Why am I afraid I won't be happy submitting to Your will, when lasting joy can only be found in You? Why am I afraid to share the gospel, when You are the only answer to life's problems? Why am I afraid to truly worship You, when I know that no other pursuit will satisfy me? Why am I afraid to forgive others, when You let me live in Your grace and forgiveness? Why do You even put up with me? It makes no sense. But You are patience and mercy and love. Thank you! Thank You for power, purpose, joy, salvation, intimacy, forgiveness, and grace. You amaze me! I love You!! In Jesus' name, Amen. Psalm 56:11--"In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?" image by Piotr Wojtkowski

Everlasting Faithfulness

Image
Lord,  El Olam , the Everlasting God, Help me to trust in you Because you are eternal--you have always been, and you will always be. When trouble comes, and there's no end in sight, help me to trust your will. When I feel betrayed by someone close, help me to trust your friendship. When life seems unfair, help me to trust your justice. When I am anxious about the future, help me to trust your peace. When I am lost, looking for direction, help me to trust your guidance. When my circumstances seem hopeless, help me to trust your wisdom. When everyone feels untrustworthy, help me to trust your character. You have always been faithful to those who seek you-- Always just to those who need justice-- Always strong to those who lean on you-- Always loving, even when I am unlovable. You are everlasting, and so is your faithfulness, your mercy, your grace, and your unending love. Why am I worried? Why am I fearful? I will hope in the Lord, from whom all blessings f
