How to Pray (a lesson from Jesus)

How should you pray? What if Jesus could show you how to pray a prayer that works? Most of us have probably prayed the Lord's Prayer. We've sung it or recited it in unison in church, at a large event, at the dinner table. It's fast, simple, and maybe a little high-church in its feel. But it's not really a dinner prayer or a convocation prayer. It's not designed for cathedrals. It's merely a sample of how to communicate with God Almighty about both big and little things. Jesus formed this prayer himself, so I'd say this is a reliable template for your prayers, too. You can use this for a model. Will God answer my prayers?

I've been wrestling with some big decisions. So I opened my Bible, and there was Psalm 145. Incredible! Just what I needed. Here's a snippet: "The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fufills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him, but the all wicked he will destroy." (Psalm 145:17-20) What are you wrestling with? The Lord is near and listening for your voice. You can pray this prayer: Lord, I need you! Help me believe that You are loving and gracious, and You have good plans for me. My desire is toward You. May that desire intensify rather than wane. Watch over me and guide me to speak truth to You, to believe truth about my life, and to leave everyone and everything else in Your care.  Amen. image by  alex grichenko

A Challenge for the National Day of Prayer

It's our National Day of Prayer. What would happen if our entire nation prayed for souls ? What if, instead of praying over health care and guns and civil rights and freedom of religion and safety against terrorism and Christians in politics (all good things to pray about)-- what if we exhausted ourselves crying over lost people ? What if we focused, not on what they do, but why they do it-- what if we were grieved by our own sinful hearts instead of grieved over the disruptions into our personal liberties and intrusions into our excessive lives? What if we were willing, like Paul-- to be poured out as a drink offering? To be sacrificed for a greater cause-- for a national and global reawakening? Are we willing to pray like that? 2 Tim. 4:5-7 "But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardships, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. A Prayer for 2017

Lord, God of Time and Eternity-- A year is passing, and a new year is beginning. This is no big deal to you, because You've watched a millennia float by, neither rushed by it nor slowed by it. But we humans are obsessed with time; we can't get enough of it. Yet You give us exactly what we need to do exactly what You've decided we should do. (If only we would follow Your plan, we'd always have enough time for everything!) That's why I'm praying. I'm tempted to ask for a better year, but I know that's selfish and short-sighted. So instead, I'm asking for Your will, Your guidance, Your discipline, Your conviction. Make me more like Jesus this year. Please. I need more of Him and more of You and more of the Holy Spirit. I need the Trinity at work in me. I suspect that endeavor will use up all the time I have. It will be time well spent. Thank You for investing in me! Thank You for blessing me! Thank You for creating a way f

What will You do for me today?

Dear Lord, I will praise You. Your blessings are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. I wonder what You will do for me today? Whatever You decide, it will be incredible, gracious, and for my benefit. Maybe I should be asking, what will I do for You? Amen. "Because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lam. 3:22, 23)
